Chiropractic Manipulation While Under Anesthesia
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012Many people find relief from pain through chiropractor Mesa AZ, for those that cannot under normal circumstances find this relief that others are fortunate to experience they may consider manipulation under anesthesia. Manipulation under anesthesia is utilized when patients do not respond to normal treatment, or cannot tolerate that may be pain associated with the treatment due to their condition.
In a procedure designed to break up scar tissue and adhesions in the local tissues around the spine, the combination of specified manipulations that are short lever along with passive stretching maneuvers are utilized in the manipulation anesthesia procedure.
Differing levels of anesthesia
Three different anesthesia methods are used for the procedure, the 1st, is the least risky and invasive and involves injecting anesthesia into the area around the tissue that is going to be manipulated. During this type of procedure the patient remains alert and awake, but the area being manipulated is not in severe pain because of the numbing medicine. This is referred to as local anesthesia because the medicine stays in the region just around the manipulation.
The 2nd type of anesthesia used during the manipulation is mild sedation. The person stays awake but is sedated in order to not feel pain and to maintain relaxation of the area being manipulated. This anesthesia method is often used in conjunction with local anesthesia. It is slightly more invasive than simply using local as there are mild risks associated with sedation and the person is not allowed to drive after the procedure so they would need someone with them to take them home.
The next type of anesthesia is general anesthesia where the patient is put out completely. This is an advanced level and is usually utilized when a significant amount of manipulation will be necessary for the treatment. Only licensed individuals perform this type of anesthesia in either a surgery center or hospital setting.
Choreographed Teamwork
Manipulation under anesthesia is interesting in that it is not a normal chiropractor Scottsdale type of adjustment, this procedure requires a team of 3 individuals. Typically there is a main physician/surgeon, then there is the anesthesiologist, and then there is the chiropractor who is certified in the specialty procedure. The MUA has been around under for over 6 decades and is recognized by the AMA.
Candidates for the MUA procedure would be patients who do not respond properly the normal Scottsdale chiropractor therapy because of adhesions or scar tissue around the shoulder or spine.
This therapy can be utilized in conjunction with surgery or physical therapy. Typically this would be tried prior to surgery and candidates for the manipulation would typically undergo 6 to 8 weeks of conservative treatment. As with other therapies, success will vary from person to person but many have found relief through manipulation under anesthesia.
